I told him and Rory that night about how their Mom, Aunt Alley and I were attacked before. He was all excited and shocked at the same time. Nah, I got them all the next day.īut Harry didn’t know what to think. Maybe hornet lives were saved by its sacrifice. My eye swelled shut and I fell back from my attack. I squished it with my hand and it fell dead to the ground. But what a smack when it hit … and stinger first. I managed to turn my head quick enough for it to miss my eye by less than an inch.

It headed straight at my eye at full throttle, just like a Second World War dive-bomber breaking from its squadron to hit a carrier deck. Then one decided on a full-on kamikaze attack. No, out they poured in numbers, buzzing in a swarm about the shed wall. I figured I had them pinned down with poison. Deadly, the full force of the shot drove him into the darkness of the wall’s interior. One had his butt stinger end sticking out the hole when I let fly with the One Shot. So, I approached carefully, aware they might attack upon provocation. I’m quite cautious about hornets because I have been stung before, multiple times, and I didn’t even mean them any harm. I told him to keep well back and, luckily, he took heed. Harry was intrigued and decided to tag along. I went back to the cabin for my spray can of One Shot Wasp Killer. Live and let live be damned, it’s time for serious chemical warfare.

They seemed upset by me starting the generator each evening, buzzing even more intently and hovering over me with menace. Now there’s a tough spot to exterminate them from. They found a hole in the outside and were living in the wall cavity. Those yellow and black buzzing overgrown cousins of wasps were building a home in my shed. Even tampering with my shed would make me mad. Well, I suppose, but I guess I’d be pissed also if some larger creature were about to destroy the home I was building. Salmon for supper, despite the hornet attacks. Harry will be thrilled that I’m telling the world about Pop being attacked by hornets. I promised to tell some more about the last trip so here goes. Hope this road trip goes great, but I really will miss those grandkids. I have another boat, two actually, one each for me and my buddy Matt Brazil. I have a single person river raft at the cabin that I haven’t used yet. Goldie is going to try and catch a salmon. No grandkids this time, so I’ll have more time for salmon and trout fishing.

Goldie and I are heading to our getaway on Crabbes River again. When I get the shed walls all studded, sheathed and secured in place on anchor bolts, I’m hitting the open road again.īy the time you are reading this, I’ll be packing the Subaru for another road trip westward. On to the outdoorsĪnyway, I’m working on that shed, but there are still those fish to catch, both trout and salmon. I’m in the planning and mechanical design phase. Canoes store upside down with two solid cross supports.Īnybody with ideas or experience, please send me an email. Kayaks can hang in a strap sling right side up. I figure on laying my boat in place and pulling one rope that lifts it directly to the ceiling joists. I’m open to advice on pulley system design for ceiling boat storage. My head knows all about it after 50 or so knocks. This photo taken just seconds before Harry tripped and disturbed the hornets’ nest. Here's exactly where I was attacked by hornets. Anyway, it has a regular eight-foot ceiling that’s too low for canoe storage. That’s where I do my mechanic work on ATV’s and other outdoor equipment.

I have a couple tied up like that now in my greasy garage. My plan is to store my canoes and kayaks up tight to the ceiling. So, I’m building this shed with 10-foot high walls. I didn’t tell her that I recently gave away one of each to my daughter Megan and family. Peggy can’t seem to understand why I have two canoes and two kayaks. I say I have just the right amount of stuff and not enough storage space. My sister-in-law Peggy reminds me all the time that I have too much stuff. That can happen when you are doing all things outdoorsy. I have too much outdoor stuff and I’m running about building a storage shed. There is much to tell and I have been busy. I felt it today, in the wind off the sea, beckoning me to the woods to listen on the breeze for the calls of ducks, geese, and moose.īut hey, there are a few fish left to catch before summer fades completely. The evenings are getting shorter and also, just now and then mind you, a tinge of autumn is felt in the air. It’s hard to believe that we are past the middle of August.
